Cancun: City Hotels and Accommodation
Cancun city centre is located approximately 20 km / 12 miles to the north-east of Cancun International Airport (CUN). Hotel rates in this area tend to fluctuate according to the tourist seasons and demand, varying more frequently with mid-range and luxury accommodation in the city. During Easter, Cancun's week-long Semana Santa festivals attracts large numbers of visitors, many of which are looking for budget lodging and accommodation, also affecting the price. In general, the high season in Cancun stretches from December to March.
Many of the cheapest hotels can be found in and around downtown Cancun, although broadly speaking, most rates are noticeably higher than other major cities in Mexico. Surprisingly, many of the hotels will reduce rates by simply asking for a discount, known locally as a 'promoción'. Mid-range accommodation generally falls into two categories, with cheaper establishments located in downtown Cancun and slightly more expensive hotels sited in and around the Zona Hotelera resort, where beaches are just a short drive away.
